1.  WATER WELL

Water is a basic human need. If there is no safe water source nearby, communities are left with no choice but to use unprotected wells, streams or rivers that are usually contaminated. This could lead to serious health problems. Hand water pumps are a much better alternative. Tapping underground water for household use decreases the risk of many water-borne diseases. Water from tube wells is safer for household use, a major step towards cleanliness, prevention of illnesses, and overall increase in the quality of life.

SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

According to Mindanao REACH (Mindanao Renewable Energy Acceleration and Coordination Hub), in the BARMM, Mindanao, only 40% of households have access to reliable electricity. Black-outs can last up to 24 hours or more in Maguindanao and Cotabato City. Worse, there are still communities that have zero access to electricity, especially in coastal areas and remote villages.

In 2014, ACT Malaysia launched the “Terangi Malamku” project aimed at providing solar lamps to households without electricity in Maguindanao area. Including the 1,250 units donated by Zakat Pulau Pinang, a total of 2,959 solar lamps were given to 1,475 households and 4 musalla in Maguindanao, BARMM.
